Beethoven: Symphony no. 9 Op. 125, Choral
09 April 2008, 8pm, Victoria Concert Hall, Singapore
An aging Beethoven, ill and deaf, conducting the orchestra and chorus in the premiere of his Ninth Symphony, conducting even after they had ceased to perform, after they had reached the end of the stunning new work, after the audience had already begun to applaud, until a singer turned him around so that he could see the thunderous cheers that were resounding throughout the hall. The fact that it passed unheard by Beethoven makes clear that he could never have heard a note of this most magnificent composition. Think about that bitter fact, and then wonder that a man so crossed by fate could still demand a choir to sing rapturously of joy.'
Beethoven's monumental 9th Symphony is brought alive by the Orchestra, Chorus and soloists from NAFA, under the inspiring and fervent direction of Conductor Volker Hartung.
This gala concert also features the Chinese Ensemble in a myriad of authentic Chinese folk tunes; including: 丝长竹青 (Sichang Zhuqing) and 茉莉花 (Jasmine Flower).

Dunstable to Charpentier
20 April 2008, 8pm, Lee Foundation Theatre, NAFA Campus 3, Singapore
'Dunstable to Charpentier' is a showcase of early music from the Middle Ages to Baroque period. Presented in voice and various instruments as used in the period, the repertoire covers early music from as early as 1300s. The performance includes the popular work 'Te Deum', by Marc-Antoine Charpentier (1645-1704). 'Te Deum' is a lithurgy of thankgiving that has an international fan base, and we are delighted to perform it. Compositions of John Dunstable, who was an influential composer in the 15th century, as well as melancholic pieces of love by John Dowland and Gilles Binchois will also be explored in this evening of music.
The Amadeus Choral Society is proud to present 'Dunstable to Charpentier' as our first public performance this year. Do join us in an evening of revelry in early music.
